While ‘tis the season to be merry, for many of us, it’s also a season for stress and anxiety. During the holiday many people tend to experience heightened emotions. The American Psychological Association (APA) found that nearly half of all people in the United States experience heightened stress during the holidays, which can put their health at risk.
To help you have a happy season, here are some tips to manage stress during the holidays:
Forgive yourself for Not Saying Yes to Every Invitation - Not wanting to participate in every event does not make you a Grinch. You may find yourself in a predicament where your family has had an abundance of invitations extended to them, but only so little time to attend every affair. Make a point of prioritizing these events and only committing to the most important ones.
Keep your Routine - Having a regular routine is important for managing mental health, especially during hectic times. Keep in mind that just because you have an event to attend, you don’t have to compromise your entire routine.
Get moving - Perhaps one of the best ways to overcome stress during the holidays or any other time is to exercise regularly. Research shows that physical activity not boosts your fitness and energy levels but can also elevate your moods.
Take Time for Yourself - Setting aside time for yourself is another great way to cope with stress during the holidays. With so much happening, you might not have a moment alone. However, it’s important to make time for yourself so you can take a breather and clear your mind. Even spending as little as 15 minutes alone might make a world of difference.
